Volunteers

Our key to success is our people!

Paid Positions (as approved by board vote)

Producer

Producers have their hand in almost every aspect of a production, coordinating both technical and artistic details with the other members of the production team. This includes the organization and management of the production budget, personnel/volunteers, scheduling of production deadlines, etc. The producer coordinates production team meetings and serves as a liaison to the MCP Board. Ultimately, it is the producer’s job to ensure that everyone has a clear job description. The producer allows others to create their artistic vision by helping them stay organized and on schedule. Many times, a team of two people will serve as a Producer and Assistant Producer, especially when one person is new to the role.

Artistic Director

Artistic Directors are the primary director, responsible for setting the vision for the set, costume, musical, and choreography choices that the other production team members are responsible for in addition to the most well-known task of running rehearsals and guiding the actors as they learn their roles.

Music Director

Music Directors are in charge of teaching the music, hiring pit musicians, and usually directing the pit orchestra during performances. They build a rehearsal schedule with the Artistic Director and Choreographer and play a role in auditions and casting.

Choreographer

Choreographers design and teach the dancing that happens during a show, creating movement on stage that reflects the vision of the Artistic Director. They coordinate with the Artistic Director and Music Director to create a rehearsal schedule and sometimes play a role in auditions and casting.

Technical Director

Technical Directors oversee the design and building of the set, in coordination with the Artistic Director and their vision. Volunteers help with the physical work of building the set throughout the production and loading the set to the stage.

Costumer

Costumers work with the Artistic Director to make decisions about costumes for each role, and then begin the process of sizing the cast members and acquiring/altering pieces to fit each person. Maintaining the costumes throughout the show in case of repair needs, keeping track of pieces, and helping to collect costumes at the end of the run are also part of the position. Knowledge of period-appropriate attire (or the willingness to learn) is important so the costumes are creating a cohesive idea.

Light Technician (adult productions only)

Light Technicians are in charge of programming the light cues for a show to reflect the Artistic Director’s vision, and then run the lights during the final week of rehearsals and each show. Training is available, and learning this job by volunteering with a show is one of the best ways to understand the task and get hands-on experience. This role has a narrower time commitment than other positions on the production team.

Sound Technician (adult productions only)

Sound Technicians are primarily responsible for managing microphones on cast members and running the soundboard during the final week of rehearsals and all shows. Training is available, and learning this job by volunteering with a show is one of the best ways to understand the task and get hands-on experience. This role has a narrower time commitment than other positions on the production team.

Volunteer Positions

Stage Manager

Stage Managers are responsible for what is known as “calling the show.” They are in constant communication with the crew members, light technicians, and sound technicians during a show, ensuring the production runs as rehearsed. Stage Managers are at many of the rehearsals throughout the production, learning the show with the cast and helping to problem-solve with the producer throughout the run.

Props Master

Props Masters are responsible for finding, organizing, and maintaining the props needed for a show throughout the run. Working with the Artistic Director, they will bring a vital component of the show to life in a way that is consistent and appropriate for the production. Knowledge of period-appropriate items (or the willingness to learn) is important so the props make sense with the story of the production.

Crew Member

Crew Members are the people dressed in all-black clothing that help with set changes, managing props, quick costume changes backstage, and other tasks related to making the show run smoothly. These volunteers usually watch a rehearsal or two to see how the show is supposed to run, and spend the last several rehearsals practicing their work with the cast. This is a great role for someone new to theater– they will see so much of what happens!

Usher

Ushers are volunteers that arrive early before a production to collect tickets, hand out programs, help patrons find their seats, and assist as needed with audience questions throughout the production.

Cast Member

Cast members are volunteers, and every show has a wide range of roles to accommodate any level of theater experience and availability. The production team and other cast members will help you every step of the way!

Light Technician (youth programs)

Light Technicians are in charge of programming the light cues for a show to reflect the Artistic Director’s vision, and then run the lights during the final week of rehearsals and each show. Training is available, and learning this job by volunteering with a show is one of the best ways to understand the task and get hands-on experience. This role has a narrower time commitment than other positions on the production team.
