Of Mice and Men Takes the Stage
Patrick Lighthall

After much anticipation, the Marshall Civic Players' performances of John Steinbeck's classic Of Mice and Men have taken the stage in downtown Marshall.

The powerful and moving story follows two friends, George and Lennie, as they move to a ranch in California to "work up a stake."

Although the characters are opposites when it comes to brains and brawn, they come together through thick and thin and challenge the true meaning of friendship.

Audiences cannot miss Steinbeck's work on stage May 8-10 and 15-17, with Friday and Saturday shows starting at 8:00pm and Sunday shows starting at 2:30pm at the Franke Center for the Arts in downtown Marshall. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students. Call (269) 781-3335 for more information.

Rehearsals Continue for Of Mice and Men
Patrick Lighthall

Rehearsals continue for upcoming performances of the Marshall Civic Players spring play, Of Mice and Men. Based on the John Steinbeck novel, a story unfolds as two migrant field workers come to a ranch in California to "work up a stake."

The first worker is George Milton, portrayed by Marshall Civic Players veteran Greg Reitsma, who's intellect and cynical outlook make him a dynamic and intriguing character. "He goes around with Lennie, kinda his big brother," explains Reistma. "Lennie is the little brother he never had."

Audiences will relate to dynamics in the play, especially between George and Lennie. "People are always trying to talk to Lennie, but George is there to protect him," says Reitsma. "It's interesting because it's an early and important scene that sets up their relationship."

Alex France is also a Marshall Civic Players veteran, portraying the simple-minded Lennie. "He's very simple, but innocent," explains France, "in a way that everyone still has inside of them and lets people connect with."

When George and Lennie find themselves in unexpected trouble, the story comes to a dramatic and moving conclusion. After so much insight into each of the characters, audiences will be on the edge of their seat with the dramatic conclusion. "The last scene is very powerful," says Reitsma.
