Couple celebrates combined 105 years supporting and creating local theater
Patrick Lighthall

"I was 22 years old, and I hadn't even voted for a president yet," explains John Marsh, portraying Lou in the upcoming performance of Marshall Civic Players' production of Four Weddings and an Elvis.

For reference, he was about to vote in an election that would eventually elect President John F. Kennedy.

"My first role was in Guys and Dolls," continues Marsh, "We were downtown in the Garden Theater, we rented the building and Morris Stulberg had started a campaign to buy the theater."

Of course, life had other plans for John and the Marshall Civic Players.

"My first show with the Marshall Civic Players was in 1965," says Georgia Marsh, portraying the vibrant and interesting role of Sandy in Four Weddings and an Elvis. "That's when we met. I was a Latin teacher at the high school and I had a featured chorus tap dancing role in Anything Goes."

With John accepting a position as school principal and starting a family with the birth of their daughter, the Marshes continued to support the theater throughout the years, even when it moved to its current location at the Franke Center for the Arts.

"We've worked on sets, managed the stage, performed in shows, collected tickets in the box office, really anything that we could help with," explains Georgia. "We've had times when we could be more involved than others, but that's how life goes."

Fortunately for the Marshall Civic Players and theater patrons throughout the decades, John and Georgia will blend their theatrical past with the upcoming show, finally have a scene together.

"We've had scenes that we were both in, but this is the first time we share a scene together, just the two of us," says John.

And with over 100 years of combined experience in the theater and over 45 years of marriage, what a show it will make for today's theater lovers.

"After all these years, we get to work with actors old and young and some that are performing in their first ever show," says John.

Join the Marshes and the rest of the talented cast when Four Weddings and an Elvis opens at the Franke Center for the Arts located at 214 E. Mansion Street in downtown Marshall, running September 5, 6, and 12-14 with Friday and Saturday shows starting at 8:00pm and Sunday shows starting at 2:30pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students. Please call (269) 781-3335 for more information.
