MCP Junior Youth Theatre presents Aladdin Jr. July 30, 2014

Marshall Civic Players Junior Youth Theatre Preps Audiences for a Magic Carpet

Organized as a workshop program, 4th - 8th grade budding actors and actresses have been learning all about the world of live theatre. The Marshall Civic Players Junior Youth Theatre program teaches youngsters about all aspects of live theatre, culminating in what will be an inspired performance of Aladdin Jr.

"They learn to make props and costumes, how to apply theater makeup, stage directions, choreography, ensemble music, and acting," explains director Tom Whitesell. "Most importantly, they learn about the teamwork that is essential to a successful show and the pride that comes from working hard for a beautiful result."

And with a show as memorable and familiar as Aladdin Jr., the results are evident. The kids are still hard at work during rehearsal learning dance steps, checking props, and crafting their characters.

"The show is a fun mix of singing, dancing, romance and humor: a perfect show with which to introduce young people to the magic of live theatre," says Whitesell.

Perhaps the best way to teach the kids is by example, and the production crew has blended together well. "Audiences will experience wonderful singing under the direction of music director Kathleen Warriner, great dancing inspired by choreographer Suzy Grant, beautiful costumes from Susan Frook, and a great set from the hands of Kathy Seifert," explains Whitesell.

But in the end, the show always comes back to the kids. "It's so enjoyable watching the wonder in their eyes as their production comes together," says Whitesell. "I am always surprised at the amount of talent that these youngsters possess. I hope they have learned that live theater is wonderful."

And a show that includes a talking parrot, a flying carpet, a spark of romance and a triumph of good over evil, Aladdin Jr. certainly promises an experience full of wonders.

The genie emerges from the lamp at the Franke Center for the Arts, located at 214 E. Mansion Street in downtown Marshall, August 7-9, with Thursday and Friday shows starting at 7:00pm and the Saturday show starting at 2:30pm. All tickets are $10, and for more box office information please call (269) 781-3335.
