DEATHTRAP! and Upcoming Season April 08, 2014

Deathtrap! rehearsals under way at the Franke Center
Franke Center

The Marshall Civic Players continue their exciting 2013-2014 season with rehearsals of their upcoming thriller, Deathtrap. The famous thriller, written by Ira Levin, details the horrible plot concocted by Sidney Bruhl (Greg Reitsma) as his student, Clifford Anderson (Sam Friia), writes what will certainly be an award-winning script.

"[Ira Levin] is very clear on how he writes his characters," explains director Christine Andrews. "They're very layered. They have lots of thin layers and you pull one off and there's another dynamic to that character," Andrews says.

One of those characters, professor and successful writer Sidney, invites his student over to his house, and a twisted plot thickens and characters start to unfold as Clifford arrives from the train station.

"Sidney is tired of living off of somebody else's coat tails," explains Reitsma. "He's had success and gotten married. He's lost success and now he is no longer the top dog in his relationship. He doesn't like that role and he has this developing relationship with Clifford to get control," says Reitsma.

Complicating the plot, Clifford arrives to find more than he bargained for when he arrives at his professor's home. "Clifford is very interesting. I'm noticing more and more that there are very few moments in which he is genuine...at all," explains Friia.

Deathtrap rehearsals continue this month and bleed into next month, with the show opening in May. Andrews and the rest of the cast are looking forward to bringing Levin's vision and thoughtful characters to life. "It is the perfect five person thriller. You can't get away from it," explains Andrews.

Performance dates are May 9-11 and 16-18, with Friday and Saturday performances starting at 8:00pm and Sunday performances starting at 2:30pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students. For more information, please contact Jane Reid at 781-6391.

Shows announced for 2014-2015 Season
Marshall Civic Players

Kicking off the season in September is Four Weddings and an Elvis, where we see Sandy, the four-times-married owner of a wedding chapel in Las Vegas, and four of her funniest weddings: Bev and Stan, who are getting married as revenge on their exes; Vanessa and Bryce, two arrogant aging stars who are tying the knot as a publicity ploy; Martin and Fiona, a gentle postal-worker and a tough ex-con trying to get married before the police arrive, and Sandy's own fifth time at the altar. The wedding bells chime as the show runs September 5, 6, 12,13, and 14.

Continuing the season is A Nice Family Gathering, which opens November 7th and runs November 7-9 and 14-16. A Nice Family Gathering details Thanksgiving Day and the first family gathering at the Lundeen household since their patriarch died. At the gathering, Mr. Lundeen comes back as a ghost with a mission: to tell his wife he loved her, something he neglected to tell her while he was still alive. The problem is, only one family member can see or hear him, and the real trouble begins when mom invites a date for dinner.

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Marshall Civic Players offers The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as their spring musical, and it is a hilarious tale of overachiever's angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Show dates are March 13-15 and 20-22.

Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is a well-known classic currently enjoying a successful run on Broadway. George Milton and Lennie Small are migrant field workers, one intelligent and cynical and the other large and slow-witted, who find themselves on a ranch in California ready to work. They hope to, one day, attain their shared dream of owning their own piece of land. Lennie's brute strength unintentionally brings that dream crashing down. Show dates are May 8-10 and 15-17.

The Marshall Civic Players continue their season with the upbeat toe-tapping Youth production of Footloose. The show follows a super-cool new boy from Chicago (played famously by Kevin Bacon in the movie version) who moves to a small religious town where dancing is not permitted. He falls for the rebellious minister's daughter, and after much conflict and teen angst, he is accepted by the small town teens and organizes a high school dance winning the affection and respect of the whole town. Footloose runs one weekend, July 16th and through the 19th.

Rounding out the year for the Marshall Civic Players will be the Junior Youth production in August, which will be announced at a future date.

The Marshall Civic Players are always looking for new and experienced artistic directors, musical directors, costumers, choreographers and technical directors (set builders) as well as sound, lighting, stage crew and assistants. If you have any interest or have questions please contact MCP Board President, Chris Gorsline at 269-580-0726 or tootdflute@yahoo.com.

Cast and Crew of Deathtrap announced!

The Marshall Civic Players are thrilled to announce the talented cast and crew already in preparation for their upcoming spring performances of Ira Levin's award-winning play, Deathtrap. Directed for MCP by Christine Andrews and her assistant Alix Curnow, Deathtrap follows previously successful playwright Sidney Bruhl (Greg Reitsma) as he concocts a twisted plot to take credit for someone else's script.

The evil plot thickens as Sidney's student, Clifford Anderson (Sam Friia), arrives from the train station. Rounding out the cast are Sidney's wife Myra (Beth Smith), the foreboding psychic Helga Ten Dorp (Barbara Kinney), and curious lawyer Porter Milgrim (John Sims).

Deathtrap will come to life at the Franke Center for the Arts with the help of producer Jane Reid, technical direction and sound from Chris and Dennis Gorsline, costumes from Carole Bolthouse, stage management and set decoration from Tucker Hale, and set painting from Beth Smith.

Performance dates are May 9-11 and 16-18, with Friday and Saturday performances starting at 8:00pm and Sunday performances starting at 2:30pm . Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students. For more information, please contact Jane Reid at 781-6391 or visit www.marshallcivicplayers.org.
