Jesus Christ Superstar Opens March 8th
'Superstar' Opening Friday March 8th At The Franke Center

Friday, March 8th will find some of the areas most talented performers on stage when the Marshall Civic Players opens their winter musical with the award winning Jesus Christ Superstar. The show runs two weekends, and should prove to be very enjoyable.

Written by Tim Rice (lyrics) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (music), Jesus Christ Superstar follows the final days of Jesus and leaves theater goers with poignant thoughts on the power of the human spirit. After Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, it follows the betrayal, Passion and crucifixion. The play closely follows Jesus (Mark Gouba) relationships with Judas (Alan Elliott) and Mary Magadelene (Brittany Lighthall) and features well known songs such as I Dont Know How to Love Him and Jesus Christ Superstar.

This rock musical (a new term for the times) arrived on stage in 1971 and was then made into a movie in 1973. The Superstar album topped the American pop charts even before it was staged. Tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by calling the MCP box office at 269.781.3335 between 1 PM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

Jesus Christ Superstar Opening Soon
Andrew Lloyd Webber inspires MCP once again

The Marshall Civic Players have tackled Andrew Lloyd Webber before ... (remember Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat a dozen years ago?) Next month, the Players have some of their very best talent to again perform another Andrew Lloyd Webber on the very same stage when they open Jesus Christ Superstar on March 8th.

The second and third weekends in March will find performers in one of the most popular and enduring works ever created for the musical theatre. The production is a rock opera that tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Andrew Lloyd Webber was influenced by the 1969 rock opera Tommy, which was the first musical billed as such. For Jesus Christ Superstar, he collaborated with lyricist Tim Rice to compose such notable songs as Superstar, Everythings All Right, and I Dont Know How to Love Him. The musical earned five Tony nominations back in the early 1970s including Best Original Score. It was more commonly referred to as a rock musical as opposed to a rock opera because of its success as a musical on Broadway, making the terms somewhat interchangeable.

The cast of the MCP production includes many names well known to the Marshall stage: Alan Elliott and Brittany Lighthall are cast as Judas and Mary Magdalene. They are joined by Chris Rupp, Bob Veramay, Dave and Diane Long, Rick and Kerry Wilson, Debbie Culver, Patrick Lighthall, Count Laws and Andy Karr, who also make up some familiar faces to audience members who have enjoyed MCP musicals in the past. There are an additional 20 talented folks rounding out the cast. Mark Gouba will be joining the group for the first time with his portrayal of Jesus.

Tickets can be acquired by calling the box office at 269.781.3335 between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday beginning Monday, February 25th. Produced by Chris Gorsline, the show is directed by Coldwaters Charles Burr with musical direction by Kathleen Warriner. You wont want to miss this one!

Jesus Christ Superstar Auditions
Audition Information For JCS

The Marshall Civic Players are excited to announce auditions for their next production, Jesus Christ Superstar. Auditions will be held January 7th and 8th from 7-9 p.m. in the third floor rehearsal hall at the Franke Center for the Arts, 214 E. Mansion St., Marshall.

The artistic director, Charles Burr, will be looking for a company of approximately 36 people starting from late high school age and older. Soloists need to be comfortable in singing in the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock style. There are many strictly ensemble parts and some non-singing parts. There is little full out dance, it is a movement oriented show so dance experience is not required. After Jesus and Mary, this will be a gender neutral production. The best person will be cast, regardless of sex. Come prepared to sing a few measures of a song, preferably, in a style similar to this musical or from the musical itself. A piano accompanist will be provided.

Rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar should begin Sunday, January 13th and typically run Sunday through Thursday nights from 7-9 or 10 o'clock. The show runs March 8, 9, 10 and 15, 16, 17.

For further information call 781-3335 between 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
