A Christmas Carol Preview October 10, 2007

Revisiting An Old Classic With The Marshall Civic Players
Rehearsals under way

With October upon us, our thoughts turn to the upcoming holiday season. And what holiday season would be complete with a viewing of A Christmas Carol? The Marshall Civic Players are hard at work to bring this tale to life beginning November 9, 2007.

Most are familiar with the story. Scrooge is an old miser who makes everyone around him miserable. He's rich, cheap, mean, and does not believe in charity. Scrooge especially detests Christmas - but this time it's different. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by four ghosts: his former business partner Marley, the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future. As an audience, we are with him as he is led on a fantastic journey through life that details how Scrooge became his infamous self.

?hen I agreed to get involved in this production, it had been some time since I visited the story,?shares Assistant Director Kim Forde. ?o the first thing I had to do was read the book again. And it just stunned me at what a beautiful work it was and how seriously Dickens had invested in the story. It has come to so many of us encrusted with mythology, and holiday good spirit and sweetness and light ?all of which is part of it ?but I hadn? remembered what a great, great story it was. What I saw in it was a story of redemption; that it is never too late for any of us to find the kernel of compassion, of humanity within us.?
?t? exciting for us as a company of artists to revisit this great, classic, holiday story,?beams Randy Wolfe, who will stage this season? production. ?e are blessed with an immensely talented cast and a wonderful adaptation that we can? wait to share. I am overjoyed to return to MCP to direct such a classic piece that has meant so much to everyone as has A Christmas Carol.?

?he combination of Phil Hagerty? moving adaptation, Randy Wolfe? dynamic gifts as a director, our production and design team? remarkable artistry and dedication and our talented cast are sure to surprise and delight audiences, whether they?e viewing this story for the first time, or returning to experience this holiday tradition again and again,?says Forde.

A Christmas Carol marks the second show of the Marshall Civic Players 59th season. Season memberships and corporate sponsorships are still available by calling or visiting the box office.

Performance dates for A Christmas Carol are November 9-11 and 16-18 at the Franke Center for the Arts, 214 E. Mansion Street, Marshall. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. Call 781-3335 for more information.

Community Involvement Marks "A Christmas Carol"

?ay God bless us, every one.? For 85 years, this famous Dickens phrase has been a part of our holiday celebration. This season is no different as the Marshall Civic Players bring A Christmas Carol to the Franke Center stage beginning November 9th. Thanks to a skillful adaptation by Marshall-native Phil Hagerty, the show remains faithful to the story of old Ebenezer Scrooge, the curmudgeonly miser whose last chance at redemption comes during one unforgettable Christmas Eve among the spirits.

Cast and crew have been hard at work to bring this classic Dickens tale to life. When asked why they chose to take on such an ambitious project so close to the hectic holiday season, they had this to say. ?aving always enjoyed the works of Dickens, especially A Christmas Carol, and not having done very much in the way of dramatic acting for many years, I decided to try out for the show,?shared Alex deFinta (Dickens). ? was very intrigued with the part of Charles Dickens in this production and was quite delighted when cast for the role. I think that this is going to be an excellent show and I am very excited to be part of what promises to be a wonderful production.?
As for Greg Reitsma (Scrooge): ?fter reading the script I was excited at the potential for it to be a great visual experience for the audience. It's a great story and I decided I wanted to be a part of bringing that to an audience. Looking at the cast and production crew we have, I'm even more excited at how fantastic this show will be.?

Says Director Randy Wolfe: ? decided to get involved with this show because it is an untimely classic that speaks to all generations about the true meaning of Christmas, which tends to become convoluted each season with commercialism. Having a few rehearsals under my belt, I am excited and honored to be working with some of the strongest talent in the area. Each cast member is wholly committed and eager to work on this project.?

It was the challenge that led Assistant Director Kim Forde to get involved. ?e?e certainly taking the staging, technical requirements, and special effects to a whole new level with this show,?Forde says. ?ut technical wizardry aside, this production is as touching as ever, with some extraordinarily human touches that will bring the show down to earth and right into the audience's collective heart.?
